the joy of cold showers

cold showers? yes, oh yes. there hasn't been hot water in the building for the past several days until this morning, so cold showers it was. but after a day of sitting in our hot, un-airconditioned studio, biking back and forth between dorm, studio, and food, i have to say that the only thing i always want when i come home is a nice, cold shower, to take my body temperature back down to normal. the flip side is that in the morning, when i am already feeling normal because the ground finally cools down at night, a cold shower is about the last thing that i want. however, now that we have hot water, i can choose what kind of shower i want! just remember: never underestimate the cold shower.

for those of you who are in cambridge and think that biking in cambridge is a nightmare - try biking in china. we've begun to venture outside of campus for food, and getting through each intersection is like playing a game with your life, avoiding cars, other bikes, and pedestrians, none of whom seem to know any of the rules. you think that horn in your car is for road rage? think again - it's to let the bikers know you're coming so they can get out of the way and avoid getting run over. on campus, biking is much tamer, though there are so many bikes that there's still a grand game of chicken going on. for someone who doesn't bike in cambridge, though, i've got to say that it's quite an enjoyable thing, and i'm kicking myself for not having one there. after china, cambridge will be a breeze...

since none of you really want to hear about every detail of my studio (trust me, you don't), i'll give you an abbreviated impression. we've been working pretty hard, though it doesn't seem quite as intense as an architecture studio because it's groupwork, and thus isn't as dependent just on me. so pretty hard really means all day, from 9am to late at night depending on impending deadlines. so far we've had one deadline - site analysis - for which people produced a lot of nice work. you have no idea how anal one can be while working in powerpoint...

when you think about the time we have to produce professional-level work in this studio, subtracting the study tours, it's about 3-4 weeks. for an entire class?!?! yeah. it's a lot of fun, though, especially seeing where planning and architecture come together. i'm not sure that i believe in it, but it's a lot of fun to dream about the future of a city. i guess somebody has to do it, right?
